This site spawned from my very first attempt at playing with NBA data and seeing if I could make any conclusions. I ended up putting together something I considered to be a smart shooting metric. My goal was to use the shooting data found on basketball reference and seeing if players were taking shots according to their strengths on the floor.
Initially, I felt as though this could be the end of the analysis. The players at the top of the ranking were expected, thats good, right? It took me a while, but eventually realized this deduction doesn't tell the story that it could. I found the referee data on basketball reference. Nothing wildly interesting, but I was shocked to see Joey Crawford reffed games have nearly the lowest average PF's per game. For such a despised ref you would assume he would have more PF calls in his game. Unfortunately there was no technical foul data. He'd surely be high on that list.
With ESPN releasing their early RPM projections we finally have a fairly complete spectrum of advanced rankings to compare and contrast. As you might remember I endeavored to create a simple ranking system that matched reasonably well with other rankings. In fairness to myself only offensive statistics were used in the Layman's Rankings so there will be disparities when it comes to players who lack any kind of defensive prowess (I'm looking at you James Harden). Without further ado, here are the rankings for players across the main advanced statistics as well as my Layman's rankings.
