Another who scores quiz. This time it's Indiana Pacers edition.
A quick reminder of how to play. There is nothing fancy here. Each screen shot is a play that results in a made basket for the Pacers. Based on the positions of the ball and players make a guess at who ends up scoring the basket. The screen shots are usually within a few seconds of the score so nothing tricky like put-backs. Keep track of your own guesses. At the end of the page there will be a link to the answers. Additionally, each image will link to a video of the play. Do yourself a favor and don't watch the video before you guess! This ruins the game. In last night's Thunder Mavericks game the Thunder reasserted itself as the dominant team in the series. After an historically poor shooting performance Kevin Durant came out of the gates firing, putting up 20 points in the first half. My focus however, kept being pulled back to the shooting guard. In maybe one of the biggest height differences you'll ever see between two players who start the game guarding each other (Roberson at 6'7" and JJ Barea listed as a generous 6'0") I was admittedly worried to start the game. Previous series with the Mavs and Twolves had lead me to fear JJ. He has always been a model Thunder killer. Last night though, Andre Roberson had a different plan for JJ's game. Complete and utter defensive domination.
Let's take a look. A quick look at playoff scoring using the comparative zone shooting discussed previously on this site. Sure, we are only two games in, but it will be an interesting thing to check back in on from time to time as the playoffs progress.
The following is a breakdown of a few first quarter defensive plays by the Thunder. Nothing in the game really mattered after the first quarter anyway.
OKC V DEN
There is no scoring system. Keep track of your guesses. Answer link at the end. You can click to images to see the video of the play after you guess. In an interview with Zach Lowe an ex-Thunder analytics guy said they would play a game where they take a screen grab of a play then guess which player would end up scoring on that possession. This interested me. I don't get to play, but you guys can. Below are 6 "questions". See if you can guess which player will ultimately make a basket at the end of the possession.
In the last Warriors v Jazz game an interesting play happened at the end of the game that could be offer some foresight into the future evolution of NBA offenses. It’s wildly common in today’s NBA to run endless pick and roll variations to free up a ball handler or shooter. It’s an incredibly simple concept and very difficult to defend with regular man to man offenses. Defenses have adjusted to defending this action by switching off every screen. Not every team is doing this yet, and there is still some fan thought that automatic switching is lazy. It will continue becoming more common with the way that the NBA evolves. This change, if it keeps up, will keep up the trend of the NBA necessarily becoming more and more athletic. You will need your bigs to be able to switch out onto point guards and not get blown by. You will need your point guards to be able to box out a power forward reasonably well. It’s almost unbelievable to expect more athleticism to be required in this sport, but I anticipate it.
