In the last post about the smart shooting metric I kind of fell off topic in my analysis of the data. I'm happy with the results despite the initial error in the data. Typing out thoughts on the data led me in a direction I didn't anticipate. Putting the post together I fell into a trap of comparing player's shooting basically to their amount of shooting. Ended up highlighting players who were shooting too much or too little. This usage realization spurred me to take the total attempts factors out of the equations and see what the results looked like then. It had become obvious that the shot attempts were weighting the results in a way I didn't necessarily want. Removing those factors results in a (mostly) new top 20. Obviously, Steph, KD and Dirk stay awesome. What we see with the dropping of the usage stat is the dropping of players that were surprisingly there in the first place. I'm looking at you Russ and DeMar.
Big time shout out to rookie Devin Booker. He's having a fantastic year so far. The surprises on the list, for me, are Joe Inglis (who?), Jared Dudley, Wes Johnson, and McBuckets. You don't exactly think of these guys as players who really pick their spots and convert efficiently. I'm actually quite surprised to see Paul George and Marc Gasol fall out of the top 20 when adjusting for usage. PG13 has been on an absolute tear this year and I figured he would be up there an almost any shooting stat you could come up with. Marc just seems like an efficient guy that only takes shots he can make. That's probably me seeing through rose colored glasses though. |
